Buying a used car? What the check covers
You arrange the viewing and tell me where and when. I meet you at the seller's and go through the car before any money changes hands:
- A full module scan, not just the engine.
- The MOT history.
- The paperwork.
- A look round and underneath.
- A battery test.
- A straight "buy it" or "walk away".
Why the scan matters on a used car. A seller can clear the codes so the dash looks clean on the day, and the fault comes back a week later. The scan shows whether the car's own self-checks have run since the codes were last cleared. If they haven't, that's worth asking about. It also reads modules that have no light on the dash, where faults can sit quietly.
What it isn't. A check lowers the risk. It can't promise a car won't go wrong later, and it doesn't replace a paid history check for outstanding finance or write-off status.
What I look out for on used cars
None of these show up in an advert.
Codes cleared before a viewing
A clean dash on the day doesn't mean a clean car. The car's self-checks show if the codes were cleared recently.
Stored airbag or ABS faults
These can sit in a module as stored history. Better found before you buy than at the next MOT.
A battery on its way out
Cheap to replace, but worth knowing before you agree a price.
An MOT history that tells a story
The same advisories year after year, like corrosion or the same brake notes, show how the car's been looked after.
What the scan can and can't tell you on a used car
The scan is one part of the check. The rest is eyes, paperwork and the MOT history.
Can tell you
- Stored faults in every module, including ones with no light on the dash
- Whether the codes were cleared recently
- Live readings while the engine runs, like misfire counts and fuel trims
Can't tell you
- Spot filler or old accident repairs. That's what the look round is for.
- Predict a gearbox or engine failure that hasn't happened yet
- Show outstanding finance or write-off status. That needs a paid history check.
