Mobile diagnostics in Kings Langley, from one person

I'm Kieran, Kiers Garage. I'm based just up the road in Hemel Hempstead, and Kings Langley is in my £60 area. It's just me, with a dealer-level scanner and a few proper testers, and I come to your home or work. 15+ years in car sales, and I buy, fix and sell cars myself.

What the visit covers

  • Every module read, with live data checked while the engine runs.
  • The smoke tester and the head gasket tester come with me, so if the symptoms point that way I can test there and then.
  • Your verdict in writing, with a fair repair price you can take to any garage.
  • About 30 to 45 minutes, and someone needs to be there with the keys.

£60

Call-out, every module read and your verdict in writing.

Kings Langley is in my £60 area, the same as Hemel.

Used car check

from£95

Buying a used car? I meet you at the seller's: full module scan, MOT history, paperwork, a look round and underneath, a battery test, and a straight "buy it" or "walk away" before you hand over any money.

Smoke tests for leaks, battery and charging tests, and ABS or airbag warning lights: from £60.

Rough running, low power and leaks

Some faults never light the dash up, or only now and then. That's where live data and the right tester matter more than the list of codes.

Misfires and rough idle. The scan shows a misfire count for each cylinder, so the search starts at the right cylinder instead of a guess.

Low power and whistling. A split hose or a leak in the intake or boost pipes lets air in where it shouldn't. The smoke tester fills the system with smoke and it comes out where the leak is. Often found on the spot.

Overheating or losing coolant. If the symptoms point to the head gasket, a combustion leak test checks the coolant for exhaust gases. It tells you whether to worry before anyone starts taking the engine apart.

Faults I come across

The common thread: the code, the live data and a test on the car, read together.

Misfires

Shaking at idle, hesitation, a flashing engine light. Coil, plug, injector or something mechanical: the misfire counts narrow it down.

Boost and vacuum leaks

Whistling, low power and lean codes. A smoke test often finds them on the spot.

Head gasket worries

White smoke, bubbles in the coolant tank, or coolant going down with no leak you can see. Test it before anyone strips the engine.

Body electrics

Parking sensors, central locking and windows have their own modules. On one recent job the parking sensor module and wiring were fine and the sensors themselves had died.

What a scan can and can't tell you

Which is why I carry more than a scanner.

Can tell you

  • Misfire counts for each cylinder
  • Fuel trims, which show if the engine is running lean (often an air leak) or rich
  • Boost asked for against boost delivered, on turbo engines
  • Faults in body modules, like parking sensors and central locking

Can't tell you

  • See a split hose. That's what the smoke test is for.
  • See inside the engine. For a suspected head gasket I test the coolant for exhaust gases instead.
  • Explain a fault that's come and gone without logging a code

How booking works

  1. Send me the symptoms

Use the booking form on my diagnostics page: the reg, what it's doing and when, and that you're in Kings Langley.

  2. I reply the same day

With a time, at home or at work.

  3. I read it and test it

Scan first, then the smoke or leak test if the symptoms point that way.

  4. You get it in writing

What's wrong, what it isn't, and a fair repair price.

Common questions

Anything else? Put it in the booking form and I'll answer when I reply.

It's down on power but there's no warning light. Is a scan worth it?

Often, yes. Codes can be stored or pending without a light, and the live data shows things like boost and fuel trims while the engine runs.

What is a smoke test?

I feed smoke into the intake and watch where it comes out. A split hose or a leaking joint shows up straight away. It finds the leaks behind whistling, low power and lean codes.

Can you tell if it's the head gasket?

A combustion leak test checks the coolant for exhaust gases, which is what a leaking head gasket lets through. It's a strong pointer, not a strip-down, so I'll tell you what it shows and what to do next.

Do I have to take time off work?

No. I can come to your work, wherever the car is. Someone just needs to bring the keys out, because the scan needs the ignition on.

Do you cover Abbots Langley, Chipperfield and Nash Mills?

Yes, all three are on my list. Put your area in the booking form and I'll confirm the price when I reply.
