At home or at work in Watford
I'm Kieran, and Kiers Garage is just me. I'm based in Hemel Hempstead, and Watford is in my further-out area, so it's £70. I come to the car with a dealer-level scanner and proper testers, at home or in your work car park. 15+ years in car sales, and I buy, fix and sell cars myself.
What the visit covers
- Every module read, with live data, so you know which system turned the light on and why.
- A battery test, because a weak battery can set false codes.
- Your verdict in writing: whether it's safe to drive and a fair repair price.
- About 30 to 45 minutes. Someone needs to be there with the keys.

Red or amber: which warning lights mean stop?
Most cars follow the same rule. Red usually means stop as soon as it's safe. Amber usually means get it checked soon. These are the ones to know:
- Red oil light: pull over when it's safe and switch off. Low oil pressure can wreck an engine quickly.
- Red temperature light: stop. An overheating engine can take the head gasket with it.
- Red battery light: the car isn't charging, and it can cut out once the battery runs down.
- Flashing engine light: ease off. It usually means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter.
- Amber engine, DPF or ABS light: get it read soon. An engine light that stays on fails an MOT, and an ABS light can too.
- Airbag light: red on many cars. The car will drive, but the airbags may not work in a crash, and it can fail an MOT. Get it read soon.
DPF lights on diesels. A diesel that mostly does short runs doesn't get hot enough for long enough to clear its particulate filter on its own. The light can mean the filter is full, or that a sensor feeding the engine computer has a fault. On most diesels the live data shows the soot level and pressure readings, so you know which before you spend money.
Faults I come across behind warning lights
The light tells you something's wrong. The module behind it tells you what.
Oil pressure and cam timing
On some engines a red oil light and an engine light come together. Live data shows whether oil supply is the problem.
DPF warnings
Common on diesels doing short runs. The scan shows whether it's the filter or a sensor.
ABS and airbag lights
Often a sensor or a connector. The code says which wheel or which part of the system.
Parking brake and tyre pressure warnings
Electronic parking brakes and tyre pressure systems log their own faults, and the scan reads them.
What a scan can and can't tell you
Here's where the scan stops and the spanners start.
Can tell you
- Which module turned the light on, and the code behind it
- Live data like camshaft timing (what's asked for against what's happening) and DPF pressure
- Each wheel speed sensor's reading, for ABS faults
- Whether a light is a live fault or something logged weeks ago
Can't tell you
- Check your oil level. A dipstick does that, and it's the first thing to check with a red oil light.
- Confirm a blocked oil pickup without the sump coming off. The scan points to it.
- Clean a DPF. It tells you whether the filter or a sensor is the problem.

Common questions
Not covered? Ask in the booking form and I'll answer when I reply.
Can you come to my work car park?
Yes. I come to wherever the car is. Someone needs to be there with the keys, because the scan needs the ignition on.
My red oil light came on. What should I do?
Pull over when it's safe, switch off and check the oil level once it has settled. If the level's fine and the light stays on, don't drive it. Get it looked at where it is.
Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?
Your normal brakes still work, but the anti-lock part may not, so take extra care, especially in the wet. If the red brake warning light is on as well, don't drive it. An ABS light can also fail an MOT.
